I cried.
I don’t get why there’s still so much hate and disapproval of an entire group of people who aren’t different from anyone else. Love is love. Love > hate. Why can’t people get that?
Something I had on my mind today during my “American Dream” class was LGBT rights…sure, a lot of good things have happened since my uncles all came out nearly 30 years ago, and especially in 2011 (NPR says it was a good year for gay and lesbian rights) but….my favorite uncle is not my uncle in the eyes of the government. He technically doesn’t count as family. But I love him. And he and my biological uncle have been together since before my parents even met (and that was a VERY long time ago). And they’re functioning members of society. And they love each other. And my other uncle (yeah, I’ve got three) has been a huge LGBT rights activist AND has been working on AIDS awareness campaigns since the 1980s.
And I’m rambling but really, I don’t get why they can’t have the same rights to marriage and job protection and to be who they are. My relatives, my best friends, my professors, they’re all really awesome people…I don’t get why anyone wouldn’t like them.
This is America. Not giving an entire community equal rights is EMBARRASSING. This is supposed to be the land of opportunity and equality.
